Heartland Waste to Energy

Alberta Industrial Heartland (AIH) waste-to-energy (WtE) facility-Canada’s First Waste-to-Energy Plant with Carbon Capture

 

The application, filed by Varme Energy Inc, for a powerplant that will be fuelled by about 205,000 tonnes per year of municipal solid waste obtained from the City of Edmonton. The Heartland WTE Facility will be located in Strathcona County, five kilometres southwest of the town of Bruderheim and seven kilometres northeast of the city of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, about 40 km northeast of Edmonton.

Varme expects to commence construction in the third quarter of 2025. Construction is expected to be competed by the fourth quarter of 2027 and operations will start in the second quarter of 2028.
