Final investment decision on Varme Energy energy plant expected by end of 2025

With an application approval rubber stamped by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) this month, Varme Energy has passed another major pre-construction milestone for its waste-to-energy facility.

The multi-hundred million dollar project will be the first large-scale waste-to-energy facility with integrated carbon capture and storage in Canada.

The facility itself aims to process more than 200,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste from landfills annually, which will be converted into electricity for the grid. It’s estimated 40 per cent of Edmonton’s landfill-bound waste will be used at the plant, which could bolster the capital city’s diversion target to 90 per cent.
